Speaking

I design and build tools for exploration, and I tell the stories of what they uncover.

My talks focus on how to build capable systems with ordinary means, what it's like to explore extreme environments, and why wonder and awe aren't side effects of science, but the thing that drives it. I also speak about learning by doing, especially for people who don't fit well into traditional education.

I've led workshops and short courses where people build their own exploration tools and learn how to think like an engineer in the real world. I'm happy to work with educators and organizations to tailor talks or hands-on sessions to their audience.
